Lost partition due to MFT corruption

The Master File Table has an entry for each file stored on an NTFS volume. It is a relational database table that stores information in the form of attributes. It can be compared to a FAT table used in FAT file system. The MFT is created when you do a FAT to NTFS conversion or a fresh formatting of any logical volume or drive. It is a critical system meta-data file, which is often subject to corruption. There may be several reasons for MFT corruption, including virus infection, file system damage, operating system errors etc. This could make the partition data inaccessible and thus, you may lose all the information stored on that partition. To overcome the problem, you need to go for recovery software through a reliable company.

For instance, you have a Windows 2000-based computer. While trying to delete some files from your system, you may come across the following error message:

“Cannot delete file name: The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable.”

Moreover, the following message is recorded in the System event log:

“Event ID: 55

Source: NTFS

Description: The file system structure on disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume "Drive_letter:"”

The 'chkdsk' utility is not always successful and you may receive the same error on your screen after running this command-line utility.

The above error is caused due to MFT corruption. This results in a mismatch between the file names stored in the directory index record and the associated File Record Segment (FRS). One of the records contains case-sensitive characters, which are supported by NTFS but not by 'chkdsk' utility.

You need to create a backup of the corrupt volume and exclude all the damaged files form the volume. Now, format the corrupt volume and use the backup to restore volume data.

If the above solution is unable to fix the problem, you should take help of lost partition recovery software. The software helps you recover all the lost or inaccessible partition data in its original form. Using them, you can also create a clone of your hard disk. This clone can be used to perform data recovery in any future event of system crash.
